Views vs Reach

Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw a post while views counts every play including repeats, and this board quotes Instagram's own definition of each. A view is a play. Reach is a person. Instagram retired the numbers in between, and most rate cards have not noticed. Here is what each one counts, in Meta's own words, and what to ask for instead of a screenshot.

01 / THE TWO NUMBERS

· Meta's own wording
VIEWScounts plays
Total number of times IG Media has been played on Instagram.
IG Media Insights, views · Instagram Platform reference

One account can add to this all day. It does not say how many people that was.

REACHcounts people
Number of unique Instagram users that have seen the reel at least once.
IG Media Insights, reach · Instagram Platform reference

Counted once per account, however many times they watch. Meta labels it estimated.

Same headline, different audience

One account, four watches

4 views1 reach

Replays count as plays. Meta says so in the reel metric it built for exactly that: ig_reels_video_view_total_time is “the total amount of time the reel was played, including any time spent replaying the reel.”

Four accounts, one watch each

4 views4 reach

The same headline number, four times the audience. Views alone cannot separate these two rows, which is why a screenshot of a view count proves nothing about how many people a brand paid to meet.

02 / WHAT INSTAGRAM RETIRED

· 21 April 2025
Deprecated metrics · Instagram Platform changelog
impressionsmedia and accountDeprecated for v22.0 and for all versions on 21 April 2025.

Requests still returned data for media created on or before 1 July 2024. Anything newer errors.

playsmediaSame date, all versions.

Replays are inside views now, not beside it.

ig_reels_aggregated_all_plays_countmediaSame date, all versions.

One views metric replaced all five, with breakdowns for follower_type and media_product_type. A rate card or a screenshot still quoting impressions was made before this, or copied from something that was.

03 / WHAT THE NUMBER DOESN'T SAY

· five footnotes worth money
01 · footnote
Organic only, unless you ask
views, likes and comments report organic interactions only, so a boosted post's paid numbers are not in there. The aggregated total_views, total_likes and total_comments do include promoted, boosted and ad media, and are available through Facebook Login only.
02 · footnote
It can be two days behind
“Data used to calculate metrics can be delayed up to 48 hours.” A screenshot taken the morning after a post is not the final number, in either direction.
03 · footnote
Reach is an estimate
Meta marks reach “estimated”, and views, total_interactions and ig_reels_video_view_total_time as “in development”. Treat the last digits as noise.
04 · footnote
Stories vanish in a day
Story metrics are only available for 24 hours. A story with fewer than five viewers returns an error instead of a number: “Not enough viewers for the media to show insights.”
05 · footnote
Some views are not on Instagram
facebook_views counts plays on Facebook and crossposted_views adds Instagram and Facebook together. If a creator quotes one big number, ask which of the three it is.

04 / WHAT TO ASK FOR INSTEAD

· three requests
1

Reach, broken down by follow type

reach with breakdown=follow_type

Whether you reached their audience or strangers the feed found. A creator whose reach is mostly non-followers is being distributed, not followed, which is a different thing to buy.

2

Views, broken down by follower type

views with breakdown=follower_type

The same split on the play count, plus media_product_type so you can see whether reels, feed or stories carried the post.

3

For reels: skip rate and watch time

reels_skip_rate, ig_reels_avg_watch_time

Meta defines skip rate as the share of views that skipped in the first three seconds. It is the cheapest read on whether the opening worked, and no screenshot shows it.

Every definition here is quoted from Meta's Instagram Platform reference — IG Media Insights and IG User Insights — and the retirement dates from the Instagram Platform changelog, all read on 22 September 2026. Meta's own labels are kept: reach is marked “estimated”, and views, total_interactions and ig_reels_video_view_total_time are marked “in development”, which means the wording can still change. The worked example is an illustration, not measured data. Nothing on this board is a figure from a campaign.
