The algorithm updates that moved the money

An algorithm update is a change in how a platform ranks what you see, and this log covers 14 years of them, 2009 to 2023, and where the money moved after each. Fourteen years of ranking changes. Every one of them moved money from one group to another. Here's who lost and who got paid.

WHENSuggested videos switched in March 2012; search followed on 12 October. Views still count, they just stopped winning on their own.

WONCreators who make things people finish. Our read: once watch time paid, making videos became a job someone could plan around.

// THE PATTERN

· git diff 2009..2023
> reach → content
Fourteen years, one direction: platforms take free reach away from accounts and give it to content.
> followers lag
A follower count records who was reached, not who will be. A 40,000-follower creator sometimes beats a 400,000 one. Illustration.
> every update reprices
When the rules change, some content gets more valuable overnight. Whoever moves first buys at the old price. Our read.

Checked 18 September 2026 against YouTube, Facebook/Meta, Instagram and Apple announcements, the RecSys 2016 paper and press reports. Corrections to the draft: YouTube never stopped counting views (it began weighting watch time: Suggested videos in March 2012, search on 12 October 2012); the eight-minute threshold is today's mid-roll rule, not a 2012 one, so it's dropped; Mosseri's words were “no longer just a square photo-sharing app” (30 June 2021); Indian apps (Moj, Josh, MX TakaTak) took TikTok's users alongside Reels and Shorts; likes became optional in May 2021. The Flurry opt-out figure is early US-only data. Lines marked “our read” are opinion.
